The concept of the institutional message is used colloquially but has not been developed theoretically. The conception that emerges from a review of the scholarly and primitive uses is that institutional messages are collations of thoughts that take on lives independent of senders and recipients. ![]() Institutional messages provide a conceptual and empirical link between the predominantly macro world of institutions and the micro world of organizational communication. Finally, it shows how to relate communication networks to other networks, thus providing the basis in conjunction with computer simulations to study the emergence of dynamic organizational networks.įull Text of the first chapter is available for free download with the password "nosh" It presents recent developments in network statistical analysis, the p* family, which provides a basis for valid multilevel statistical inferences regarding networks. The book then establishes a model from the perspective of complex adaptive systems and demonstrates how to use Blanche, an agent-based network computer simulation environment, to generate and test network theories and hypotheses. This model is multilevel, providing a network decomposition that applies the various social theories to all network levels: individuals, dyads, triples, groups, and the entire network. ![]() The authors develop a multitheoretical model that relates different social science theories with different network properties. Theories of Communication Networks presents solutions to all five problems. Finally, almost all the research is static and cross-sectional rather than dynamic. Foruth, it typically uses descriptive rather than inferential statistics, thus robbing it of the ability to make claims about the larger universe of networks. Third, network analysis has employed very little the insights from contemporary complex systems analysis and computer simulations. Second, it explores single levels of analysis rather than the multiple levels out of which most networks are comprised. First, it tends to be atheoretical, ignoring the various social theories that contain network implications. To date, most network research contains one or more of five major problems. The Logic of Connective Action shows how power is organized in communication-based networks, and what political outcomes may result. in other cases, conventional political organizations deploy personalized communication logics to enable large-scale engagement with a variety of political causes. in some cases, connective action emerges from crowds that shun leaders, as when Occupy protesters created media networks to channel resources and create loose ties among dispersed physical groups. in many of these mobilizations, communication operates as an organizational process that may replace or supplement familiar forms of collective action based on organizational resource mobilization, leadership, and collective action framing. Rich case studies from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany illustrate a theoretical framework for understanding how large-scale connective action is coordinated using inclusive discourses such as “We Are the 99%” that travel easily through social media. ![]() The Logic of Connective Action explains the rise of a personalized digitally networked politics in which diverse individuals address the common problems of our times such as economic fairness and climate change.
